Al Nasr Square as it used to be, today Deira's main square is known as Bani Yas Square. Prior to that it was named Gamal Abdel Nasr Square. This was in recognition of Egypt's Pan Arab Leader. Not clear when that name was applied. He was very popular in Dubai particularly among the many Egyptian School Teachers employed in Dubai's Schools. Gamal Abdul Nasser died 28 September 1970 but his name continued to be used until 1980s. Pevious names may have Deira Square or Cinema Square (Al Wattan Cinema was located in the Square), Taxi Square or simply the Square in Deira. Whatever its name, the Square has always been the centre of Deiraside and focus of Deira's commercial activity.
